Electricity and audiovisual solutions for the Postgebouw in Lokeren
With the renovation of the former Postgebouw in Lokeren, an iconic city building has been given a new role as a central meeting place for residents. The City of Lokeren invested in a thorough renovation and extension, with Elektro Kamiel Smet responsible for the complete electrical installation and the integration of modern technologies.
Giving a historic building a new lease of life
Giving historic buildings a new future without compromising their character requires craftsmanship, vision and technical expertise. The renovation of the former Postgebouw in Lokeren perfectly illustrates how heritage and modern technology can reinforce one another.
After purchasing the building in 2019, the City of Lokeren invested in a major renovation and extension project. Since the end of 2025, the renewed complex has served as a central meeting place for residents, housing the tourist office, city archives, meeting rooms, a council chamber and a multifunctional reception area.
Where the inner courtyard once stood, a new volume has been constructed and connected to the historic building through a patio. The result is a harmonious ensemble where old and new complement each other.
Technologies preparing the building for the future
For the complete electrical installation, the City of Lokeren relied on the expertise of Elektro Kamiel Smet, part of EEG Group.
The teams at Elektro Kamiel Smet delivered a comprehensive package of electrical technologies, including lighting, fire detection, network cabling, access control and intrusion protection. In addition, the meeting rooms were equipped with modern audiovisual facilities.
A particularly noteworthy aspect of the project is the new council chamber. Thanks to the integration of speaker-tracking cameras and livestreaming technology, residents can also follow council meetings digitally. The technical infrastructure therefore contributes not only to user comfort, but also to an accessible and transparent local democracy.
Tailor-made solutions in a complex renovation
Renovation projects require a different approach from new-build developments. In the Postgebouw, the new technologies had to be carefully integrated into an existing historic building while a completely new section was being constructed at the same time.
Every cable route, technical installation and connection required a tailor-made solution. Through close collaboration between all construction partners and continuous coordination during execution, the Elektro Kamiel Smet project team successfully respected the historic architecture while meeting today’s technical standards and expectations.
A future-oriented meeting place for the city
With the renovation of the Postgebouw, Lokeren gains not only a renewed public building but also a central meeting place where public services, culture, social interaction and local decision-making come together.
For EEG Group, this project once again demonstrates how technical installations can contribute to buildings that are not only sustainable and high-performing, but also create real added value for their users.
“EEG is proud of this challenging project. It perfectly illustrates what EEG stands for: creating future-proof buildings that offer genuine added value to their users. Thanks to the installation of all electrical technologies, our colleagues at Elektro Kamiel Smet can be proud of an excellent end result: a future-oriented building that once again provides the City of Lokeren with a central place for meetings, public services and democracy.”
