New state-of-the-art data centres are being built in both Heist-op-den-Berg and Mechelen to replace two existing facilities located in Leuven and Mechelen. The project is being developed for KBC Bank and was designed by Arcadis & BAUT Architects. Both buildings are interconnected and serve as each other’s backup facility. The buildings and their technical installations are identical.

Through efficient energy use, rainwater harvesting and the reuse of residual heat to warm surrounding buildings, the project is designed to achieve the lowest possible environmental footprint.

EEG is responsible for the installation of all technical systems, the Building Management System (BMS) and the Energy Management System (EMS) across both sites.

KBC will start using the new data centres from mid-2027 onwards. By the end of 2028, all equipment will have been fully migrated and the two existing data centres will be taken out of service.
