Multitechnical solutions for the renovation of Ghent-Sint-Pieters railway station

For NMBS, EEG is contributing to the large-scale renovation of Ghent-Sint-Pieters railway station. The project is transforming the station into a comfortable, sustainable and fully accessible mobility hub for both passengers and staff.

The renovation of Ghent-Sint-Pieters railway station is currently well underway. The objective is to make the station functional, comfortable and independently accessible for all travellers. The project represents a total investment of approximately €100 million.

Thorough renovation

The ongoing renovation works, which started several years ago, include the restructuring of the station, the redevelopment of platforms and tracks 1 to 7 (following the earlier renovation of platforms and tracks 8 to 12), and the partial fit-out of the ground floor and basement level. To minimise disruption to rail traffic, the works are being carried out in several phases.

Glass roof with solar panels

The tracks and platforms are not only being renewed but also covered by a glass canopy equipped with solar panels. The project’s sustainable character is further enhanced by the integration of heat pumps. The renovated station will not only be a showcase of sustainable design; thanks to the new roof structure, passengers will also be better protected from the elements.

A multitechnical project

Several EEG companies are involved in this project, which brings together a wide range of technical disciplines. EEG is responsible for all technical installations, including electrical systems, lighting, fire detection, copper cabling, sprinkler systems, smoke and heat extraction (SHE) systems and HVAC installations.

As multiple EEG teams are active on the project, open communication is essential. Clear guidelines and robust coordination are crucial to ensure that the various activities are aligned and executed efficiently.

For CEO Didier Vanden Broucke, the renovation of Ghent-Sint-Pieters railway station perfectly illustrates the type of project EEG is proud to contribute to:

“We firmly believe that the integration of technology in buildings is essential both for promoting a sustainable society and for enhancing user comfort. The renovation of Ghent railway station is a perfect example of this vision in practice: through the integration of heat pumps and the installation of solar panels, we are taking another step towards a more sustainable future, while the integration of our technical solutions also contributes to a pleasant station environment for both passengers and NMBS staff. Moreover, this project perfectly aligns with our multitechnical strategy.”
